Domaine de Mucelle - wine
Challex
The commune of Challex is the sunniest in the whole Pays de Gex, halfway between the Jura and Geneva (12km), east of the Ain department.
Its vineyard of about fifty hectares is the westernmost of the immense crescent that stretches along the Swiss side of Lake Geneva, before continuing into the canton of Valais. The vineyard, a little away from the pretty wine village, overlooks the Rhône and the canton of Geneva, facing the Alps.
The vineyard covers an area of 8 ha and is divided as such:
- 1 ha of Gamay
- 1.7 hectares of Pinot Noir
- 2.8 ha of Chasselas
- 0.5 ha of Pinot Gris
The vineyards are in south-east facing slopes. The density of plantation is 10000 feet / ha in the old plots (Gamay especially) and 5600 feet / ha with intergrowth grass for the others. Plants from old plots come from mass selection. In order to limit yields, the Royat cordon size replaced the traditional Guyot pruning on all the Gamay and some plots of Pinot Noir and Chasselas. The vines are trellised and worked according to the traditions of the region with a manual stripping in June which allows a better sunning of the bunches of grapes. Harvest in systematic green on the reds. The number of treatments is very small with priority to sulfur and copper and insecticides are banned. Harvesting is done by hand in order to sort.
The vinification takes place entirely in our cellar. The white wines are decanted for 48 hours before the alcoholic fermentation which, as for the rosés is followed by a control of the temperatures. Chasselas is sometimes chaptalized, unlike rosés and reds, which rarely are. Malolactic fermentation is done systematically on all wines except Pinot Gris. The aging is done on lees all winter and the whites and rosés are filtered just before bottling. The red ones are generally glued and sometimes filtered. The years go by but do not look like ... thankfully!
