As fascinating as it is demanding, the Alps are a territory that imposes its power and its constraints on human societies. The chiseled horizon of the peaks forces the eye to aim for the sky. To settle there requires a great capacity of adaptation and creativity. To circulate there requires a great ingenuity to play with the topography. The Alps are a place of a unique economy, an attractive territory that is constantly reinventing itself. Its image is shaped between sublimated traditional heritages and a remarkable imagination of innovation. The place seems to impose its strength. It is no less fragile and sensitive to the climate, which changes more rapidly than elsewhere. The culture of adaptation of those who inhabit it remains fully solicited.
